How to Call French Telecom Providers From Abroad (Orange, SFR, Free Mobile)

By the DialVia team ·

Quick answer: Orange: +33 9 69 39 39 00, confirmed directly on Orange's own help page. Free Mobile: +33 1 78 56 95 60, consistently published across independent sources but not directly on free.fr. SFR: no clearly confirmed number, two different candidates circulate with nothing to verify either.

Three operators, three different levels of confidence

All three major French operators run everyday customer service through a short code that doesn't work once you leave France, 3900 for Orange, 1023 for SFR, 3244 for Free. Where they differ is what happens next. Orange is the most transparent, its own page states the international replacement directly. Free's replacement number is consistent everywhere we looked, just not confirmed on Free's own site. SFR is the least clear of the three, with two conflicting candidate numbers and no official source for either.

What's actually verified

Provider Number Confidence Full guide
Orange +33 9 69 39 39 00 Verified, stated directly on Orange's own help page Call Orange from abroad
Free Mobile +33 1 78 56 95 60 Consistently published across sources, not directly confirmed on free.fr Call Free Mobile from abroad
SFR No clearly confirmed number Two conflicting candidates, use the online account instead Call SFR from abroad

A warning worth repeating

Free doesn't operate a toll-free 0800 number for customer service at all, so any number presented that way claiming to be Free's official line is worth treating as suspicious. It's the same caution we'd give for any operator in this series: a short code that supposedly "works from abroad" or a toll-free number for a line that doesn't normally offer one is a sign to double-check before dialing.

The cheaper way to actually make the call

Every number here, once you have the right one, is a standard French line, and calling it from outside France means paying your own carrier's international rate. With DialVia, you call any of them over Wi-Fi from your browser instead:

  1. Open DialVia and sign up (about 30 seconds)
  2. Select France as the destination
  3. Enter the number you need
  4. Hit call

Frequently asked questions

Which French telecom provider is easiest to reach from abroad? Orange, it's the only one of the three with its international number stated directly on its own official page.

Are any of these numbers toll-free from abroad? No. All of them are standard French lines, billed at your own carrier's international rate unless you're calling over Wi-Fi.

Why doesn't SFR have a confirmed international number? Its domestic short code doesn't work outside France, and the numbers that circulate as replacements conflict with each other, with nothing we could confirm against an official SFR page.

What should I have ready before calling any of them? Your account or line number, your full name and date of birth as registered with the provider, and details of the specific issue.
